Camping in the Landes and the Gironde: a Bordeaux city break

Its prime location between the Landes and the Gironde makes our 4* Camping Club Marina Landes the perfect destination for visiting Bordeaux, world-famous for its vineyards, wine, unrivalled architectural heritage and listed landmarks. Here is just a snapshot of the many unmissable sites.

Port de la Lune: the old town and Garonne docks

A 90 minute drive from our Camping Club Marina Landes, Bordeaux is a fantastic art and history city listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 2007. It's also home to the most listed monuments after Paris, starting with the Grand-Théâtre, one of the most beautiful 18th century theatres in Europe. Designed by the architect Victor Louis and opened in 1780, it is now seen as one of the most beautiful theatres in the world. (guided tours available outside summer)

Place de la Bourse is a favourite among locals for a stroll and also attracts countless passing tourists. People come here to gaze at the 18th century buildings reflected in the world's biggest water mirror. The water jets and mist are very refreshing, especially in the summer heat. Take a little detour to Place de Quinconces just a few steps away. Here you'll find the impressive Girondins Monument in tribute to the Bordeaux politicians who were executed during the French Revolution, the great fountain and its bronze sculptures, two rostral columns that are over 20m high.

A visit to the Garonne's docks will take you to Porte Cailhau, a Renaissance Arc de Triomphe built to the glory of King Charles VIII in 1494. On the way back to the Saint-Pierre area you'll see the great Bordeaux bell tower, one of the oldest belfries in France (13th century) and the last relic of the city's ancient ramparts.

Continue your visit with a walk to Saint-André Cathedral, listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 1998. Construction began in the 12th century and ended four hundred years later. In the meantime they added a separate bell tower, the famous Pey-Berland tower with incredible views of the Gironde capital from the top.

Last but not least, if you're camping near Bordeaux and you love visiting museums during your holidays, we recommend the contemporary art museum, Aquitaine Museum and Decorative Arts Museum. Of course, no trip to Bordeaux would be complete without visiting the legendary Cité du Vin.

Bordeaux's Cité du Vin, a one-of-a-kind site

It would be sacrilege to have a camping holiday in the Landes near Bordeaux and not visit the Cité du Vin. Whether you like your wine or not, it's an exciting show-stopping trip with an interactive and sensory vibe.

Ranked in the National Geographic's Top 10 Museums in the World, the Cité du Vin is a great introduction to anyone who wants to explore Bordeaux's vineyard. Behind its modern round architecture, the museum whisks us away through space and time to the heart of vineyards all over the world, from Antiquity to the present day.

If you want to delve deeper then you hit the famous Châteaux du Médoc wine route (Latour, Margaux, Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild...). What's even handier is that our campsite is on the edge of the Médoc Landes!
