The Côte d'Argent is well known for its exceptional beaches, surfing and cycling in the forest. But it is also a land shaped by a culture specific to its territory and its inhabitants. Between traditions and heritage, going on holiday in the Landes allows you to discover the different facets that make up the Landes culture.
Landes traditions
Before the forest covered a large part of the Landes, the land was once vast swamps. This is why farmers used stilts to walk and watch over their herds. Today, it is still possible to see stilt-walkers at local festivals, folk festivals or even during the férias.
The immense forest of the Landes gave birth to the gemmage, which consisted of harvesting the sap of the pines, which was used as raw material for various products such as varnish. Although the practice is no longer used for industry, it is still possible to discover the art of gemmage in the Landes.
